ABC
I am working on a new series with a working title of ABC. The theme, or unifying motif, is the alphabet as a cataloging device.
Here’s where that idea came from; I received a vintage accordion folder and I instantly fell in love with it. The card stock is about twice the thickness of contemporary products and it’s aged and worn from practical, helpful use. And the typography – oh the clear, utilitarian, make-no-mistake-about-its-use-alphabet is perfect. It is a time-tested cataloging device artefact! I was geeking out.
Each divider is layered with ephemera that reflects the process of cataloging, filing and communications. A focal point of the designated letter(s) is prominently stencilled, commanding acknowledgement of the divider’s purpose. Machine stitching unites the disparate collage materials and suggests a depth of creativity lives within the corporate exterior of this cataloging device. I love the texture, order and disorder that my stitching approach contributes to this pragmatic object.
So far I have created XYZ and W. Here you can see the latest completion, UV. Seemingly I have started at the end of the alphabet, working my way forwards. Hmmmm, seems like I’m revealing my non-pragmatic, organic sense of organization.
